The 47%

The Republican presidential nominee has stated the 47% of Americans who do not pay income taxes are moochers and who feel that they are entitled to food, shelter, and medical care.
Who are these "moochers"? Well, according to the The Tax Policy Center , nearly half are senior citizens. These seniors, according to Romney feel entitled to the social security they paid into all those years they were working. One third of those "moochers" are the working poor who make less than $20,000 a year.
Mitt Romney has stated that his job as president is not to worry about those people.
I can only marvel at the crassness and obliviousness of Romney. I think the image below says it all:
Romney, by his own words, considers the elderly, disabled veterans, the working poor, and children living in poverty to be "moochers".
Like many other Americans in this economy, I teeter on the edges of being part of that 47%. Many years ago, I was part of that 47%. It was the safety net of a Pell grant, subsidized housing, the earned income credit, and the child care credit that enabled me to become a income tax paying citizen.
Past presidents like FDR, JFK, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and yes, even George W. Bush did care about the 47%. President Obama likes the moniker of Obamacare, because as he said, he does care.
A nation's greatness is reflected in how its most vulnerable citizens are treated. A nation cannot progress if people are starving. A nation cannot progress if laws are unjust and onerous. A nation cannot progress if people lack shelter. A nation cannot progress if people lack education. A nation cannot progress if disabled veterans do not receive the care they need.
Romney is not a leader. He knows how to game the system and has made millions upon millions on the backs of American taxpayers while all the while outsourcing American jobs overseas. Romney and his company, Bain, are directly responsible for many of those who find themselves as part of the 47%:
Romney is—you know, the old-school industrialists, like Mitt Romney’s father, they were men and women who built communities. They had factory towns. They were very anxious to leave, you know, hard legacies that people could see: hospitals, churches, schools—you know, the Hersheys of the world, the Kelloggs. But these new owners have absolutely no allegiance to American workers, American places, American communities. Their only allegiance is to the investors and to themselves. And so, it’s not at all uncharacteristic to have these situations where people are pleading for their jobs or they’re saying, you know, "We’ll tighten our belts, if you just make this concession and keep us." That’s irrelevant to the Mitt Romney-slash-Bain Capital-slash-Carlyle Groups of the world. They’re entirely about making profits. And if that means shipping jobs to China or eliminating jobs, that’s what they’re going to do. And that’s the new generation of corporate owners in this country.
Romney has no real investment in America. His true vision is profits. He's an opportunist who doesn't create any tangible wealth. What will he do with the United States if he is elected president?

Cruelty: Romney & Ryan Go Hand in Hand

Romney has a streak of cruelty as evidenced from the treatment of his dog Seamus and how he treated a fellow classmate he thought was gay. His company Bain Capital speaks volumes about what truly drives Romney: the lust of money without thinking about who it may harm. Romney doesn't want to release details of his tax plan. Perhaps, because it would be greeted the same way as Ryan's tax plan. People just couldn't believe it would be so cruel. The newly adopted GOP platform will allow for Romney's tax plan to eliminate the home mortgage deduction. Paul Ryan co-sponsored a bill with Congressman Todd Akin to redefine rape. The bill would have also prevented women who had been raped, either by a stranger or family member, to get an abortion. Both Romney and Ryan do not seem care about who they harm. Romney didn't care about the thousands of good American jobs he sent to China. He didn't care about his dog Seamus. His actions with his classmate show that he is a bully. His tax plan will harm 98% of Americans while allowing the wealthiest to have their offshore bank accounts become even more stuffed. Ryan's abortion plan would have forced a victim of rape or incest to carry to term any pregnancy that resulted. To me, this just means that a women is being raped by the government.

Liberty & Justice for All

I've been thinking a lot about the Pledge of Allegiance and the words liberty and justice for all. For too many years, the focus has been on the words under G-d which were not even added until 1954. Somehow, we've forgotten what this country is about. Liberty and justice for all has been made a mockery of by the War on Drugs, the PATRIOT Act, NDAA, and allowing torture, specifically water boarding. We executed Japanese soldiers after World War II for using water boarding on US prisoners of war. Some how it has become about who can get rich the quickest and thereby gain power. By the Supreme Courts ruling on Citizen's United, those with the most wealth will have the most speech. Speech is no longer free. It now costs big bucks. We do not even know who is donating all that money. It could be coming from foreign countries for all we know. People from around the world used to look to the United States. That admiration was so great that France commissioned the Statue of Liberty which has now been standing since 1886. The immortal words of Emma Lazarus' The New Colossus are engraved as hope:
"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
We've long since shut the door on those huddled masses yearning to be free with the quota system that was initiated in the early 1900's. See the thing as I see it, is that there is too many in the United States who want to turn the United States into a vast company town. Too many laws are being passed that grant more and more rights to businesses while curbing the rights of individuals. I'm not talking just about employees, I'm talking about everyone. More and more of public spaces paid for by tax dollars are being given over to businesses. Prisons across the country are being privatized. A lot of these contracts state that the occupancy rate must be kept at around 90% for 20 years. A lot of new laws for felonies will have to written to maintain that rate. Can anyone say "three strikes, you're out"? Our prisons are being filled with people who because of their third charge, even if it is a misdemeanor, are now felons. Can you imagine facing a life sentence for stealing $153.84 worth of video tapes? This is not justice. It is cruel and unusual punishment. It is one of the reasons we declared independence from the British. The state of Tennessee has made it illegal for the word gay to said in schools because it might offend some religious people. Michigan has passed a law that basically states that if you bully some one because of moral or religious beliefs, you can. Kansas has passed a law that says a doctor can lie to woman who is pregnant and the fetus has major issues if there is suspicion she might choose an abortion. oh and the doctor can't be sued if the woman should happen to die after she was lied too. These laws are so un-American, it makes me wonder if we can ever overcome them. The procedures we now have to endure to travel by plane are a fiasco. Benjamin Franklin stated it best:
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
The Occupy Wall Street movement and the protests against laws enacted against women across the country give me a great deal of hope that not all is lost and that we will once again be a beacon of justice. We just have to remember our history and strive to undo all those laws that have that have encroached for too long on our civil liberties.
